Throwing My Body in Front of the Arts, and, a New Book Club
It's always bad news // good news around here, I know.
2025 just keeps coming??
Dear Readers,
I am furious about so many things, but the constant attack by the current administration on the arts is heartbreaking to me. I was going to say “particularly heartbreaking” but, no, it’s all heartbreaking! People getting deported without due process! Trans folks having their medical treatments taken away! Free speech threatened at every turn!
Last week’s Nothing for the Group had some great tips on the particular issue of the cuts to the NEA. I immediately donated to a local theatre I love (East West Players), and I’ll be making calls to my reps as well, as outlined in the newsletter. If you’re reading this, I know you care about the arts, so I urge you to find ways to help as well. (I urge you to call your reps about all the above and a given number of other terrible items as well.)
In less depressing news, I am SO THRILLED to announce I have started a subscription book club, the Sweet N Spicy Sapphic Romcom Book Club, with my friend Celia Laskey, through the amazing LGBTQ+ bookstore, Allstora!
I am SO PSYCHED to be teaming up with one of my besties AND Allstora, who donates a book to an LGBTQ+ youth for every new membership signup! I love sharing the good news of sapphic romances AS Y’ALL KNOW so this is a dream opportunity for me!
You can start your first month of membership for only $1 so I highly recommend trying it out!
xoxoAmy

Some recent and recent-ish stuff!

Reading
I don’t read a ton of memoirs but Ione Skye’s Say Everything is a Gen X dream. She knew everyone! I could not get enough about the parties and hangouts and nights out, the dreamy ‘80s movie boys and the sexy ‘90s models and, like, I dunno, if you thought someone was hot during this general time period, Ione Skye probably kissed them? Good for her. This was a blast.
Cooking With
OK I just want to say that I got this stupid expensive Flamingo Estate Balsamic Vinegar as a gift from a vendor but it is simply the best balsamic I have ever used and this makes me furious!!!
Cooking
I am OBSESSED with these garlicky alfredo beans. I am very into beans now. Beanfluencedable.
(Re)Listening
Like many Gen Xers, 10,000 Maniacs MTV Unplugged was a vital part of my life. The new B&N exclusive vinyl is beautiful and also David Byrne is on three tracks? I would like to tell you I’ve since listened to the Natalie Merchant/David Byrne “Let the Mystery Be” a normal number of times but that would be a lie.*

*Just like it would be a lie to say that this video of Natalie Merchant and Michael Stipe from the 1992 Rock the Vote event didn’t define my teenage sexuality.
