I’m making a quilt.
Dear Readers,
I wrote the other week about taking a Sewing 101 class:
Since then, I finished Sewing 101! I also went in for an extra session to make a second pillowcase so that I have a full set:
Since then I started Quilting 101. I will be honest that before I started Sewing 101, I was not planning on learning to quilt. However, the shop where I take lessons has so many beautiful and cool quilts hanging around that it feels like pro-quilt propaganda. In my head, quilts can look very homespun Americana tradwife etc., WHICH THEY CAN, but also they can look modern and exciting and like they listen to NPR and vote progressive.
I am big on getting excited about a potential interest or hobby or whatever and then quickly bailing or burning out or getting overwhelmed, but having class on my calendar has helped me stick with this thus far. It’s not just that though (though it helps! I’ve probably only stuck with weight-lifting because I have a weekly appointment with a woman who makes me lift heavy things once a week, let’s be real); I really like it!! It feels so good to spend a couple of hours without my phone just focusing on the work, and on top of that, learning new things while I focus.
Quilting is a little stressful, I will say, because there is choice. Not only did I have to select my fabrics from several amazing collections (this is Ruby Star Society’s Poolside Too and my favorite print from it is the pink with tigers) but then I had to pair them for squares, then pair them again with two patterns on each side, and NOW I HAVE TO LAY OUT THE WHOLE THING TO BE SEWN TOGETHER, FOREVER.
I could probably come up with some writing metaphor here but I’m not going to because honestly this stands as its own thing! The work is its own work, and I am so glad to have it to look forward to, to think of future projects I want to complete, and to feel like FINALLY I checked off one of those big-picture items from my list of things I’ve been wanting to do for years.
xoxoAmy

In Her Spotlight is my latest release! It’s about fame, the closet, and second chances. Also fast cars and cute dogs!
I always hope I’ll have something VERY CLEVER to type here but often that’s that!

Your quilt in progress is a dream! Ruby Star makes so many amazing prints!!!
(I dipped my toe into quilting a few years back and now the pile of fabric I acquired stares at me balefully from the corner of my bedroom, but maybe this is the summer I pick it back up. Maybe. Maybe.)
Yay quilting!
