Some updates and events!
Dear Readers,
It’s your sweaty summer hater checking in. If you hate summer too you know I’m there for you. If you like summer, good for you! You must be having a great time. I am ducking inside a store and camping out in front of their AC. We’re all doing what we can!
I just turned in my copyedits for ON HER TERMS. Y’all. I am just really proud of this book. I am proud of ALL my books but there is something really special about this one, and I am so so eager to share it with you. If you wanted to preorder it now, I would super NOT be against that. If you’re worried I’m going to unveil some cool preorder campaign later and you’ll miss out, don’t you worry, I ALWAYS include early preorderers* because my whole vibe is teacher’s pet.**
I’d forgotten to tell y’all that I have a cool local event coming up soon! On Saturday, August 10, I’m taking part in the first Burbank Book Fest! I’ll be signing from 11am until noon, but the whole day is packed with people I’m a fan of and people I am friends with (some overlap on those lists of course). It should be super fun, and it’s at Three Sisters Coffee, which is a great shop in Magnolia Park, so it should be an extremely fun time.
I also have some very fun things coming up on Bookstore Romance Day, which is August 17, which I’ll share with you soon. Basically, if you’re in Los Angeles, I will probably be at a corner of it that’s convenient for you between August 10 and 17. And then I’ll be in Milwaukee for Romance Con as well as a fun bookstore event in September… so much more soon!
Finally: if you’re in the US you know there’s an election coming up.*** It is a great time to check your voter registration and make sure everything is still current and you’re set for November.
xoxoAmy
Consumption
It’s all reading this week because all I did during my isolation the other week was READ and now I’m on a roll and honestly cannot stop.
Reading
I absolutely tore through Alicia Thompson’s The Art of Catching Feelings. I know, me, a straight sports romance, but, like, it’s just so charming, the banter is so good, and that palpable anxiety you get because someone has made a poor choice but you keep rooting for them anyway while waiting for that poor choice to blow up in their face, whew, just nailed it.
Also Reading
I was lucky enough to get an early copy of Celia Laskey’s Cover Story which is a sapphic romance set in the celebrity blogosphere era of the mid/late aughts. Y’all, this story has it all: super hot love interest, a dog I loved, and behind-the-scenes Hollywood details. Preorder this one now!!
Also Reading
I was on a sapphic romance panel with J. Vanessa Lyon at Tucson Festival of Books, and was so psyched to meet her and hear about Lush Lives, and my time stuck at home gave me a chance to finally read it. Sexy, smart, thoughtful, LUSH! It’s about to come out in paperback so get a copy in whatever cover thickness you prefer.
Also Reading
I loved Rufi Thorpe’s The Knockout Queen, and so I was not surprised to fall hard-as-hell for Margo’s Got Money Troubles. This book is a bestseller with a NYT rave so you’ve probably heard about it already but it is just SO GREAT and SO UNPUTDOWNABLE and it’s so nice to have a book with so many rewarding moments and characters to root for in so many different ways.
On Her Terms
I could tell you the whole synopsis here but mainly you just need to know it’s a fake-dating book set in the Out in Hollywood universe!! ISN’T THAT ENOUGH???
"I adore all of Amy Spalding’s books and ON HER TERMS is no exception. I related so much to Clementine’s story, and I think so many other people will too. This book is about coming out and coming into your own later in life, finding the courage to do what you want, instead of what’s expected of you, and, of course, falling deeply and gloriously in love." —Jasmine Guillory, New York Times bestselling author
"Amy Spalding continues her takeover of gay LA! ON HER TERMS is another sexy, smart addition to her interconnected tales of queer women in Hollywood and their misadventures in love, work, and life. I loved watching another of Amy's expertly drawn, quirky, self-aware heroines embrace the potential in her work, her friendships, and, ultimately, herself — on the road to falling for her dream girl. Cheers, queers — Amy Spalding is for us!" —Mackenzi Lee, New York Times bestselling author
"ON HER TERMS might be my favorite Amy Spalding book yet—probably because it’s the steamiest yet! I related so hard to Clementine’s desire not to follow the expected steps of life, like marriage and kids and relegating friendship to a lower status once those big-ticket items have been achieved. I also think this book will be so affirming for all the bi babes who have ever questioned their place in the LGBTQ community—the B is there for a reason!!" —Celia Laskey, author of So Happy for You
*Am I saying there is going to be a great preorder campaign? HELL YEAH I AM even if it meant finding a new sticker company because 2024 is a wild ride.****
**It seems impossible that there’s no YouTube clip of Libby Mae Brown’s audition for Red, White, & Blaine, but only the deleted scene is there. Yes, the deleted scene is superior,***** but it doesn’t fit the joke I wanted to make.
***This is the biggest understatement I’ve ever made.
****This is the second-biggest understatement I’ve ever made.
*****If it were up to me, the deleted scene would have won a special Academy Award. EVERY YEAR SINCE 1996.
