I hate talking about this!!!

Dear Readers,

I REALLY hate talking about exercise and fitness, etc., because as a fat person in our society I can feel how EAGER people are with their hot little hands and bated breath and sad looks of pity when I bring up anything related to moving my body because these people assume I am trying to get smaller and they want to cheer me on and tell me the best way to do it and tell me all the things they already suspect I am doing incorrectly.

However I am only interested in making my body feel great and age better and improving in three key areas: strength, balance, and flexibility. I feel like these are real woman-in-her-late-40s goals and I am great with that. A friend and I discussed that you know you’ve hit a certain age when the song “Passionate Kisses” really hits home. Is it too much to ask? I want a comfortable bed that won’t hurt my back.

I started weightlifting nearly two years ago. It is slow-going but I can tell it’s helping because things like carrying groceries up to my third-story apartment are easier than they used to be. I hear it is helping me in other ways that feel less quantifiable to me personally but if it’s true, great, fine! I’ve written before how it’s tricky because my trainer just makes the weights heavier and often doesn’t tell me, so I don’t know I’m leveling up. And I think this is OK, because slow-going progress toward a larger life goal is the thing that matters, not the number on the weight itself.

For many years I’ve had START DOING YOGA on my general life to-do list.
